What is a Root Canal?

The tooth pulp is a soft material that contains nerves and blood vessels, providing the teeth with nourishment and allowing the experience of temperature sensations. However, pulp isn’t necessary for a tooth’s survival; by removing the damaged or infected pulp from the center of your tooth, it’s possible to prevent an extraction and reduce the risk of other complications.

When are Root Canals Needed?

True Dental Group uses root canals to treat concerns regarding the health of the tooth pulp, caused by:

  • Extensive dental work
  • Chips, cracks, or other enamel damage
  • Oral injury or trauma to the mouth
  • Deep tooth decay

If you experience tooth pain, swelling, or a sensation of heat in your gums, you likely need a root canal. Don’t wait to make an appointment at True Dental Group — our Independence dental team will provide the fast, effective care you need!

How Does Root Canal Treatment Work?

At True Dental Group, a root canal treatment requires two visits. At your first visit, your True Dental Group provider conducts an oral exam and takes a series of digital x-rays that will be used to assess your tooth and to determine the extent of the damage and decay.

If your provider determines you’ll benefit from a root canal, they will administer a local anesthetic, and carefully remove the pulp from the center of your tooth. Then, your provider will rinse your tooth out and fills it with safe material. Your provider will then use an intraoral scanner to take impressions of your tooth that will be sent to a laboratory for the creation of your custom-crafted, perfectly fitted new dental crown!

Before leaving our office, your dentist will apply temporary crown to the top of your treated tooth.

When you return to our office for your second root canal visit, you'll return to place your permanent, custom-crafted dental crown. Your True Dental Group provider may administer an anesthetic and will remove your temporary crown, then replace it with the permanent crown. Your provider will polish your teeth and provide instructions for caring for your new crown at home.

What is Recovery Like After a Root Canal?

  • Eating only soft foods for the first 48 hours
  • Brushing and flossing gently
  • Using a desensitizing toothpaste
  • Avoiding extremely hot or extremely cold foods
  • Avoiding spicy foods

Most patients will adjust to their new crown in just a few days. If your bite feels "off" or your crown bothers you, contact us at True Dental right away!
