Dental Implants Q & A

What are dental implants?

Dental implants replace your natural tooth roots with small titanium posts. Your True Dental Group provider inserts them into your jaw, and they integrate with your natural bone structure over time. Once the integration process is complete, dental implants provide a foundation for restorations like bridges, crowns, or implant-retained dentures.

Dental implants are sturdier and longer-lasting, and they feel more natural than dentures. With good oral hygiene and routine preventive care, they often last a lifetime.

What are the benefits of dental implants?

Dental implants offer many benefits, including:

  • Easier biting and chewing
  • Clearer speech
  • A more defined facial structure
  • Convenience
  • Durability

Getting dental implants also reduces your risk of more serious oral health problems. By replacing missing teeth, you can prevent gum recession and keep your remaining teeth in their optimal position.

What does getting dental implants involve?

At True Dental Group, getting dental implants takes at least three visits.

First dental implant visit

Before placing dental implants, your True Dental Group provider conducts an oral exam and takes oral X-rays to assess the health of your gums and the volume of your jaw. If you have gum disease or not enough bone to support the implants, your provider might recommend a prerequisite treatment like a deep cleaning or a bone graft first.

During this appointment, let your provider know if you have any underlying health problems like heart disease or kidney disease. These issues won’t keep you from getting implants, but they may increase the risk of surgical complications.

If your provider determines that you qualify, they administer a local anesthetic and insert a series of implants into your jaw. The number of implants you receive depends on several factors, including the number of teeth you’re missing and the type of restoration you desire.

After the placement procedure, your provider may write a prescription for pain medication and gives you instructions for home care.

Second dental implant visit

A few months later, when the implants finish integrating with your jaw, you return to True Dental Group. Your provider takes digital impressions of your mouth with an intraoral scanner and sends them to a laboratory.

Manufacturing experts at the lab use your scans to design and craft a custom dental restoration (or restorations) that fit your implants perfectly.

Third dental implant visit

When your restorations are complete, you visit True Dental Group for the last step. Your provider attaches the restoration(s) to your implants, polishes them, and explains how to care for them.
